Nitrogen credit trading as an incentive for riparian buffer establishment on Pennsylvania farmland

چکیده

Agricultural nitrogen loading is a leading cause of eutrophication within the Chesapeake Bay. Agriculture in Commonwealth Pennsylvania responsible for large portion load entering bay. Vegetated riparian buffers are common agroforestry practice used to intercept surface runoff and subsurface leaching nutrients such as from upland agricultural fields. Watershed-wide nutrient credit trading has been suggested mechanism reducing pollution The cost producing credits through establishment on farmland was analyzed determine if could provide an incentive buffer establishment. Forest were shown have marginally lower production costs payback periods than grass filter strips. Larger higher smaller due increases outpacing revenue. Nitrogen determined be inadequate high credits. Furthermore, less lucrative compared Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, share program. However, market price or bundling with other phosphorus ultimately result providing adequate These results guide framework programs watersheds.

Nitrogen sources and Gulf hypoxia: potential for environmental credit trading

A zone of hypoxic and anoxic waters has become a dominant feature of the northern Gulf of Mexico. Nitrogen draining into the Gulf from the Mississippi Basin has been identified as the primary source of the problem. Reducing nitrogen loads from point and nonpoint sources in the basin is the primary goal of an action plan developed to address the problem. In this paper, we use data on point sourc...

Improving the farmland biodiversity value of riparian buffer strips: conflicts and compromises.

The intensity of management of lowland grassland fields in the United Kingdom, coupled with the fact that such grasslands dominate much of the lowland landscape, means that there are now few opportunities for many plants, invertebrates, birds, or mammals to survive. The Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) has investigated whether fencing off the margins of such fields next to watercourses to co...

Finite Element Simulation of Total Nitrogen Transport in Riparian Buffer in an Agricultural Watershed

Riparian buffers can influence water quality in downstream lakes or rivers by buffering non-point source pollution in upstream agricultural fields. With increasing nitrogen (N) pollution in small agricultural watersheds, a major function of riparian buffers is to retain N in the soil. A series of field experiments were conducted to monitor pollutant transport in riparian buffers of small waters...

Root biomass and soil carbon distribution in hybrid poplar riparian buffers, herbaceous riparian buffers and natural riparian woodlots on farmland

The objectives of this study were to compare coarse root (diameter > 2 mm) and fine root (diameter < 2 mm) biomass, as well as distribution of soil carbon stocks in 3 types of riparian land uses across 4 sites located in farmland of southern Québec, Canada: (1) hybrid poplar buffers (9th growing season); (2) herbaceous buffers; (3) natural woodlots (varying in tree species and age). For all lan...

New Trading Evaluation Mechanism on Incentive Design

This paper shows the effects of traders evaluation based computational mechanism design in electronic commerce. The proposes a new user evaluation methods based on multi-criteria based rating system. In the existing trading systems, most of them have user evaluation to help buyers/sellers decision making to trade. However, a user can never know where the potential trading partners did trade suc...
